Mullaperiyar: MDMK’s Vaiko arrested near Kerala-TN border
Theni, Dec 21: With political parties in Tamil Nadu engaged in protests over the Mullaperiyar Dam row that is slowly turning out to be an inter-state conflict between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, in a dramatic turn of events MDMK chief Vaiko was arrested while crossing Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.
Vaiko was there spearheading an economic blockade in Kerala that will see 13 major routes from Tamil Nadu to Kerala being blocked. The MDMK and other regional parties were planning to impose an embargo in districts of Theni, Kanyakumari, Coimbatore and Nilgiris.
Clashes and many instances of violence are being reported from various parts of both states with the violent acts mostly carried out in the border districts.
With the economic blockade move, Kerala will be much affected since the state is dependent heavily on Tamil Nadu for its daily requirements of milk, fruits and vegetables. Seen as a move to cause maximum hurt, Tamil Nadu believes that the clamour for a new dam is seen as baseless.
Both the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been appealing to its citizens to refrain from violence.
